In our first On Mission Together post we looked at the idea that we all can be unified in passion. That we don’t have to compare passions, be jealous of passions, use passion as an excuse to do or not to do a, b or c but that with God as our driving force, our passion can actually unify us. I believe the same is true when we look at our callings.
As someone who has given my life to Jesus Christ I believe my calling is found in Matthew 28: 6-20
“Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
If God is my passion, the force behind everything I do, then this is my calling. To go and make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything Jesus commands. I have heard many times over the years things like this (maybe these phrases are familiar to you as well)
” I don’t know what God wants me to do with my life”
” I don’t know what my calling is , how can I know?”
“How do I hear God speak to me about what he wants me to do?”
“What if I choose wrong because I didn’t really hear God?”
Here is some truth for us all. We have an enemy, Satan. He doesn’t want us to be going out and making disciples. He doesn’t want us to be baptizing people in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and he for sure doesn’t want us to be learning what Jesus commands and then sharing it with others. So he is going to do everything he can to tell us the same lies over and over again. Lies like;
“You missed it”
“You can’t know your calling”
“You aren’t capable of a calling as good as ____”
“You are ill equipped to do anything for Jesus”
“Are you sure that was God speaking, how can you really know”
Sound familiar to you? Because they do to me.
Will you come with me back to the basics? This isn’t a competition and God isn’t playing a game with you or me. He gave us all one calling, one mission. To go and to make disciples. To share his good news, his gospel, his story of redemption and salvation with people who need to hear about it. That as we learn more about him that we then live out what he commanded and share those commands with others.
This calling isn’t only for the pastors, missionaries, teachers or those gifted at speaking and writing. This calling is for each and every person who calls Jesus their Lord and Savior. Each one of us is driven by our passion for God, to live out this calling. Where it looks different is in the work we are uniquely equipped to do. More on that in On Mission Together/ Work.
